Briefly describe the history of the museum, its collection and donors.
The Manav Vikas Sangrahalaya was established in January 2001 as a part of the Govind Ballabh Pant Social Science Institute located in Jhunsi, Allahabad. This museum aims at preserving and highlighting the folk cultures, local traditions and heritage of marginals of our country. It is different from other archaeological museums as it portrays the less celebrated living, vibrant and dynamic aspects our cultural traditions, particularly UP and its neighboring regions.
Display Section :
The display section of the Museum is an integral and complementary part of the research wing. The artifacts, dioramas, replicas and other visuals displayed here, focus on art and culture of different communities of our nation.
There are four galleries in the museum:
The first gallery, Manav Vikas ki Katha, highlights the march of civilization since pre-historic time and a coherent history of the development of indigenous art and culture.
The second gallery, G B Pant gallery, showcases contribution of Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant, in creation of new India and his vision regarding the socio-economic development of Uttar Pradesh. This also showcases cultural history of Allahabad city.
The third gallery, i.e. the Ganga River Culture gallery, represents the socio-economic life and culture of communities on the bank of River Ganga. This gallery is funded by Department of Culture, UP Government and Government of India
The fourth gallery, i.e. Bidesia Gallery, is documentation of shifting identities in the process of indentured migration during Colonial times and their relationship to folk culture of homeland. It particularly focuses on Bhojpuri indentured labourers. This gallery is outcome of a international research project based in three countries namely The Netherlands, Surinam and India, funded by Netherland Cultural Fund, Prince Claus Fund and Mondrian, Amsterdam.
