Hawa Mahal in Bari Chaupar was built in 1799 AD by Maharaja Pratap Singh. The chief architect was Ustad Lal Chand. Terracotta Art of Rajasthan is exhibited on the first storey of Hawa Mahal, Sharad Mandir. The antiquity of terracotta art practices in Rajasthan date back to Pre-Harappan times. Terracotta objects in large quantities have been unearthed from many excavation sites in Rajasthan including Virat Nagar, Sambhar, Rairh, Kalibangan, Ganeshwar, Jodhpura, Sunari, Noh, Ahar, Nadol, Baror, Tarkhanewala Dera, Chak 86, Chandravati, Binzor, and many more.
The exhibited terracotta objects were unearthed from Viratnagar, Rairh, Noh, and Ganeshwar. The excavations in Viratnagar included ochre-coloured, painted black, red, and grey ware, coins, sculptures, beads and other archaeological remains. The findings from Rairh's excavations were punch-marked coins, pottery, stone vessels, terracotta plaques, terracotta figurines, bird and animal figurines, iron and copper implements, and beads of different types. The site of Noh had painted grey ware, iron arrow head and spear heads, copper and bone tools, beads, dice, copper bangles, scud, sickle, copper coins, terracotta figurines of elephant, horse, bull, camel, monkey, sheep, peacock, parrot, swan etc as the findings. The excavations in Ganeshwar included mesolithic tools, pottery (varies from red to orange in colour), arrow head, beads, rings, bangles, fish hooks, nails, spear heads, celts and balls made of copper. The display is a mix of all the above mentioned objects and the photo documentation of these archaeological findings.
