Briefly describe the history of the museum, its collection and donors.
Gandhi Memorial Museum, and the various ashrams at Sabarmati Ashram, through the display of personal objects that Gandhi used during his stay in Ahmedabad, give visitors a glimpse of how he lived. It takes the audience through a journey of India seen from the eyes of Gandhi. This museum is also frequently used as a space for children to learn about India's history and the initiatives that Mahatma Gandhi took for its freedom.
The new museum, which was built by Charles Correa in 1963, houses 34,177 letters written by Gandhi, along with 8718 pages of Gandhi's manuscript, some 6000 photographs, 334 films, 509 audio cassettes, 121 records, 63 video cassettes, and 155 awards. The Satyagrah Ashram in Kochrab was the first ashram that Gandhi built after returning from South Africa in 1915.
