The Partition of India was one of the most defining events in our subcontinent’s history. Estimates suggest that up to 18 million people lost their homes and up to 2 million people lost their lives. The Partition Museum is the world’s first museum dedicated to the Partition of 1947. It is a ’People’s museum’ that aims to tell the stories of the millions impacted through oral histories, archival materials, and objects donated by Partition Survivors. Housed in the historic Town Hall building in Amritsar, the Museum is located at a 5-minute walk from the Golden Temple.
The Partition Museum's collection holds many objects from homes left on the other side of the border. Each object at the Museum has a story implicitly archived in it and reflects the material culture of a people divided. These objects are important milestones of the events, but also symbols of losses suffered and trials endured by the people.
The walk at the Partition Museum will focus on the social, cultural and political situation prevailing in the sub-continent during the time of the Partition, with a special focus on personal stories of love, loss and longing. The second part of the walk will showcase stories of migration and resettlement, and its effect on individuals as well as on the society.
