The Indian Museum is the oldest museum in India, and was founded by the Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1814. With numerous galleries and displays on art, archaeology, geology, zoology and anthropology, the Indian Museum houses a plethora of artefacts and antiques that showcase our country’s marvellous culture and history. The museum is an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Culture, a part of the Government of India.
This walk through the museum aims at discussing the different art forms on display—stone sculptures, ivory work, textiles, paintings and more—while also highlighting the role of the museum itself in upholding these traditions. Certain objects and artefacts will be selected for discussion, in order to trace the history of the art forms and the periods concerned.
