Briefly describe the history of the museum, its collection and donors.

Spread over an area of 13,500 sq ft, the Sand Sculpture Museum in Mysore attracts tourists from all over the world because of its uniqueness of being the only museum in India that is dedicated to sand sculptures. A 15-feet-high sand statue of Lord Ganesh welcomes visitors to this open air space. The nearly 150 sculptures in this museum have been carved out of 115 lorry loads of sand, with the museum being designed to be eco-friendly.

Located on the road to Chamundi hill the museum is the brainchild of sculptor M.N. Gowri, said to be the only woman sand sculptor in India, and houses many of her works.

The space hosts sand sculptures carved to depict nearly 16 different themes including Goddess Chamundeshwari, the Dasara procession, ancient civilisations, wildlife, the Gitopadesha, and Disneyland.
