Briefly describe the history of the museum, its collection and donors.
The District Museum in Jowai was established in 2010. It has a small collection which is ethnographic in nature, and includes dresses, ornaments, household items, and agricultural paraphernalia of the local people.
The museum is considered as one of the centres for studies into the history and culture of Meghalaya. It is a relatively small museum in terms of infrastructure but there has been a steady collection of artefacts since its inception.
The Directorate of Arts and Culture, Govt. of Meghalaya, Shillong, annually puts up advertisement for purchase of artefacts of historical relevance to the state. As the District Museum is run by the state government, the collection process needs approval of the Art Purchase Committee which consists of members drawn from various fields and government departments. This committee meets once every year to discuss various items that sellers bring for sale and either approves or rejects the proposals.
The museum also has a small gallery showcasing local artists.
