The Natural History Museum in Trivandrum brings together various aspects of the history like culture, art, and fauna, divided over three buildings. It has exhibits of the biodiversity of Kerala—floral, faunal, microbial exhibits in their natural habitat, types of forests, earth history, nocturnal garage, sounds of birds etc. The museum aims to bring to the masses information about the various living things in their natural habitat, through specialised galleries for mammals, skeletons, birds, vertebrate, invertebrate, index (for pre-historic animals), ethnology (culture of tribes and castes in Kerala) and fossils (fossilised wood).
The museum also has a garden area in the front where there are props of dinosaurs and other main animals that make up the history of the world. It has been set-up in a such a way that the natural habitat is visible once you step foot inside. The museum also has considerable resources for research, owing to its collection of avian fauna figures, a catalogue of all the birds found in India, and other books and materials for researchers
